On the morning of March 29th, the Young Bakers gathered in the classroom without knowing what to except about this very special class!

A few minutes later, a friendly smiling face appeared at the door, accompanied by two, just as smiling, young women and a bag full of goodies: this was Ms Helen Gao, the director of New Song program and her two volunteers for the day.

New Song aims to instill a greater understanding of human value, unique identity and lasting security across the Chinese population. Through its flagship program « You Are Special » (YAS), based on a novel written by Max Lucado, New Song shares the simple yet profound truth that each person is unique and valued.

In Shanghai for a few days for the « train a trainer » program, Helen kindly offered to give the SYB students the only spare morning of her stay, to tell each one of them how special they are in this world.

As Helen had never met this year’ SYB students, she started with a warm-up game, to get to know them a little more and make them feel comfortable. Throughout the morning, the students took time to evaluate themselves, how other people see them and how it impacts them on a daily basis. All coming from disadvantaged backgrounds, they have to face difficult situations as they are often judged by where they are from and their level of education. With the games and workshops such as role-playing, Helen made them realize that how people see them does not matter as much as how they see themselves. Indeed, each of us has our own strengths and weaknesses, and this is what makes us special as individuals!

At the end of the morning, each student received the beautiful illustrated book “You Are Special”, to always remember that they should follow their dreams and accept themselves as they are. It was a truly moving moment to see their smile while receiving the book and a friendly hug by the YAS team. On behalf of the Young Bakers, I would like to give a warm thanks to Helen and her two dedicated volunteers for spending this morning with the Young Bakers and making them feel special!
