On March 27th, SYB had the great pleasure to be invited by AmCham (The American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai) to share its experience on its innovative cooperation with partner hotels.

Organized by the Amcham Food, Agriculture and Beverage Committee, the event was named as “Solving Your Talent Needs: Innovative Partnerships with NGOs”, which exactly features one of SYB’s innovative points. The goal of the event was to share how NGOs and F&B professionals can work together: the NGOs by providing training to those who are in need, and the F&B professionals by hiring them to solve their talent needs.

Floriane, SYB program manager, detailed how SYB trains underprivileged youth to French bakery so that they can secure employment in that industry upon graduation. SYB students are divided into two groups. While one group receive classes in the baking center, the other group intern at our partner hotels, such as Marriott hotels.

Jane Wang, the human resources director from Marriot Changfeng, spoke highly of our program: “SYB interns are just as talented as other interns and they have learned basic baking skills. What they learn in our hotel are professional requirements such as being on time in the morning. After one year of internship, they have fully developed into a chef we just need.”

As SYB program manager Floriane presented in the first session, SYB is a program giving much attention to the comprehensive development of the students. We are proud that our students can seize the chance to work in five-star hotels. As Helen Cheng from JW Marriott commented, “Our cooperation with SYB is great! We hope to recruit more SYB students this year.”

The other charity featured in the event was the Renewal Center (RC), which provides sustainable paths out of homelessness in Shanghai. After a period of work therapy, the Renewal Center offers employment placements with partners such as Element Fresh or Maya. Managers of both restaurants shared how important it is for them to give the chance to those in need to reintegrate society through employment.

After the sharing section, people are passionate to put forward questions. They constantly came to Floriane for more information. Many of them expressed their willingness to cooperate with us in the future.

Thank you to the AmCham for organizing such a great event and thank you to Marriott for having shared their partnership with us.
