Welcome to the 7th batch of Young Bakers !
For most people, summer is for holidays and downtime… but at SYB we never stop, and as soon as the 6th batch of students graduated we were on the road to recruit the 7th batch of Young Bakers!
At the end of July, I set off for a 15days tour across Gansu, Shaanxi, Henan and Anhui. By night train, bus, jeep or foot, we visited the centers of our partner NGOs and, when possible, the candidates’ home, to conduct close to 70 interviews! I had the invaluable help of SYB bakery and pastry teachers Zhang Zhenghai, Wang Li and Xiao Jinjin, who being among the first students of SYB come from the same background as the candidates and can share their precious insights. Together we asked the candidates about their family, their experience, their source of income, to make sure that they need our help and that SYB would be adapted to their needs.
Our students are recommended by 8 partner NGOs who work with orphans, AIDS impacted kids, migrant children, street kids, children of convicts…They are 17 to 23 years old young adults who, in addition to being born into poverty, were faced at some point with the disease, imprisonment or death of a relative, putting them at the margin of society. Listening to their stories is tough emotionally, and yet it’s always remarkable to see how, even faced to such hardships, they have never given up and, as any person of their age, still have dreams and hopes for their future. The most beautiful thing for us is to know that, thanks to our network of partners and supporters, we will be able to make their dream to find a qualified job and lead a dignified life come true.
So let’s welcome the 7th batch of Young Bakers: 32 students (15 boys and 17 girls), coming from 8 different provinces and very diverse backgrounds, but who all have one thing in common: they want to become a baker.

欢迎第7批年轻烘焙师!
对于大多数人来说，夏季是休假时间….但是海上青焙坊不会停工，随着第6批学员即将毕业，我们已经开始招聘第七批学员了。
在七月底，我进行了为期15天的旅行, 横穿甘肃、山西、河南和安徽几个省份。我们搭乘夜行列车、公交车、吉普或步行，拜访了我们合作伙伴NGO的中心，甚至做候选人家访，进行了多达70场面试！我得到海上青焙坊面包师和糕点师张政海、王莉和肖金金的很大帮助，他们和候选人有同样的背景，是海上青焙坊的首批烘焙师，可以分享他们的宝贵观点。我们一起询问了候选学员的家庭背景、人生履历，收入来源来确认他们是否需要我们的帮助，是否海上青焙坊适合他们的需求。
我们的学员是由8个NGO合作伙伴推荐，这些NGO组织从事孤儿，艾滋病遗孤、农民工子女、流浪儿童和服刑人员子女相关的工作。学员的年龄在17到23岁之间，他们除了出身贫困外，还在某个时期面临着亲人生病，失足或去世等问题，让他们处于社会的边缘。听他们的故事，你会被深深打动，即使面临这样的困难，他们仍不言放弃，像其他同龄人一样，仍然对未来充满梦想和希望，这是多么令人鼓舞。最让我们欣慰的是由于我们的合作伙伴和支持者，我们能够帮助他们找到一份不错的工作，让他们梦想成真过上有尊严的生活。
