From students to professionals: the Young Bakers are ready for the transition!

从学生到职业人:青年烘焙师们已准备好转变!

On Sunday, June 5th the Young Bakers had the privilege to have Ms. Lydia Zhu giving a training session combining Curriculum Vitae (CV) writing, interview preparation and early stage professional development. Current HR director of W Hotel Bund Shanghai and former HR director of Langham Xintiandi (a current SYB Internship Partner), Lydia shared with the Young Bakers her experiences both as a job seeker and as an interviewer.

6月5日星期日,海上青焙坊的学生很荣幸地听Ms. Lydia Zhu上了一堂关于简历写作、面试准备和职业初期发展的课。Lydia是上海北外滩W酒店的人力资源总监,此前曾就职于上海新天地朗廷酒店。她从求职者和面试官的角度和学员们分享了自己的经历。

Where should I start with my CV? What experiences can I put in a CV? Do employers expect to see my photo? Understanding that the Young Bakers might be overwhelming themselves with such questions, Lydia began by listing all sections of a standard CV, explaining in detail why an applicant should provide such information and what the potential employer would be looking for in it. She encouraged the Young Bakers to see CV as an opportunity to review their life experiences, thus preparing for future interviews. The section was concluded with presentation of the CV of an SYB alumna, which gave the soon-to-graduate 8th batch of Young Bakers a clearer idea of what a CV should look like and helped relieve the stress of writing their very first draft.

我的简历要从何写起呢?我应该把哪些经历写进去?照片要不要放呢?Lydia知道同学们大概在为这些问题发愁,所以首先列出了标准简历的几大板块,并详细解释了为什么求职者要提供这些信息、潜在雇主透过简历想要找寻什么内容。她鼓励青年烘焙师们把简历看作是一次回顾人生经历的机会,这样他们也等于是为未来的面试做准备。简历培训的最后,Lydia展示了上一届SYB毕业生的简历,让我们马上要毕业的第8届海上青焙坊学生清楚明白地看到简历究竟是什么,也减轻了他们写人生第一稿简历的心理负担。

To follow was interview preparation. The Young Bakers learned of the importance of manners and took note of details to pay attention to before, during and after the interview. Laughters burst out when Lydia referenced to examples of silly mistakes. The word “interview” was then demystified as Young Bakers learned that an interview typically consisted of a self-introduction, questions around the applicant’s motivation, and questions around the applicant’s personal and professional qualities. Experiencing works better than Lecturing. Therefore Lydia carried out impromptu mini mock interviews with the Young Bakers. “Share with us a situation where you helped a customer or a colleague.” Though shy at first, a good number of students spoke up eventually and told their stories. With Lydia’s help, they got the chance to re-examine and reflect on their experiences to recognize their unique points.

紧接着是面试准备的部分。学生们知道了行为举止得体的重要性,认真记录了在面试前、过程中和结束之后有哪些要注意的细节。Lydia还举了一些另人颇感惊讶的反面例子,引得同学们哄堂大笑。接着,Lydia缓缓揭开面试的神秘面纱,同学们了解到面试通常由三大块内容组成:自我介绍,关于申请者动机的问题,关于申请者个人和职业品质的问题。体验比说教管用——在接下来的培训中,Lydia对同学们进行了当堂迷你面试。“请告诉我们一次你帮助了顾客或是同事的经历。”虽然一开始有些害羞,但还是有相当一部分同学逐渐发了言,讲述了他们的故事。在Lydia的帮助下,同学们重新检视和反思了过往的经历,从而挖掘到自己的独特之处。 

In the last part of the workshop, Lydia gave sincere suggestions to the Young Bakers, who are about to enter the professional world. She urged the young bakers to value team work, and do as much work as they can even if it “is not my job” and might seem “unfair”; “The more you commit, the more you learn.” thus said Lydia. Before she concluded the day, Lydia reinforced the point that for entry-level positions, the skills one possessed was not necessarily the most important thing of all, but what mattered more was the individual’s motivations and attitudes towards work.

最后一部分,Lydia给即将要踏入职场的海上青焙坊学生们提了很多诚恳的建议。她敦促学生们要重视团队合作,要尽可能多地付出,即便有些事情“不是我的职责”或者是“不公平”。“吃亏即是福,多做即多学。”Lydia这样说。这天的培训结束之前,Lydia再次强调了对入门级岗位来说,技术不一定是最重要的,更重要的是对于工作的态度和个人的意愿。

Very soon the Young Bakers will be living independently and taking up their own responsibilities. In the midst of excitement and uncertainty, may you keep today’s lesson in mind and always remember what you started baking for, Young Bakers!
