Words from a Volunteer: My Experience with SYB

My bread selling experience started with Shanghai Young Bakers when I learned about their program and their products. After having baking as my most favorite pastime for a few years, it is such a delight to be able to sell at a stall with loads of beautiful and delicious bread of various kinds – mainly French types so to speak, but wait, aren’t the French the best bakers? No need to exaggerate, the three hours at the bread (sometimes cakes) stall in the Saturday market are my happiest moments that I’m always looking forward to during the week. And the feel of doing something good is also a reward since the income will be used to support the non-profit program that enables youth from underprivileged families to find decent jobs in the bakery industry by giving them free French baking class for one full year.

There are two markets that we often go to; one is at 259 Jia Shan road, and the other 425 Yan Ping Road. We go to each one every other week, and we give previous notice at our weibo website – you are very welcome to follow us on Weibo at http://weibo.com/shanghaiyoungbakers.

Curious about the types of bread we have? We have croissants made with butter and flour imported from France, which you could tell the difference immediately at the first bite. Sometimes we add goodies like chocolate chips, raisins, or pistachios to the croissants to give them a different touch of flavours that could be surprisingly yummy. We also have brioche in various shapes, with crown brioche and braids always there as they are the most classic; and the rye sourdough that keeps well for as long as two months if you wish – though mine was consumed in less than two days as it was too good not to have for every meal. And certainly there is baguette, a must-have French bread, which is always the first to sell out at the market – it is crispy outside and chewy inside with a slight salty flavor – you just could not stop! With baguette you can also do garlic bread: simply spread some butter, add minced garlic and herbs to sliced pieces and baked for 4 to 5 minutes in a pre-heated oven – few people could resist a good piece of garlic bread! Of course these are just some of what we have, and each time we may bring a few new things that might even become a hit of the day.

Finally, I’m delighted to say that there is none additive or preservative whatsoever added to our bread or cakes. We only use the most natural and best-quality materials in our baking. So, if you would like to try out some baked goods made with care, and do a charitable thing at the same time, why not come and have a taste of our bread and cakes 🙂
