Li Bin, an eighteen-year-old teenager from Gansu province of China, has graduated from Shanghai Young Bakersand signed a contract with Lesaffer the French yeast company, thus becoming a master baker.

Meanwhile, there’re other 29 students from 8 different provinces of China graduated with Li Bin.

Shanghai Young Bakers is a non-profit organization founded in 2008 by twelve French volunteers who hope to make contributions to the Chinese society. It is committed to providing underprivileged teenagers between 17 and 23 with one-year free training on French baking, which would equip them with a professional skill and qualify them for proper jobs. In the past seven years, Shanghai Young Bakers has trained more than 120 students.

Li Bin grew up in a remote village in Gansu province. Although he studied well in school, his poor family could not afford his education after secondary school. His mentally handicapped father and mentally disordered mother were both not able to work, so Li Bin and his grandfather had to carry the heavy burden of raising the family. After becoming one of the 7th students of Shanghai Young Baker, Li Bin spent one year on learning making French bread, western and Chinese pastry, having classes on life skills and English. He said that he felt really proud to have command of a skill which lifted himself out of poverty and helped him raise the family.

We were told that students of Shanghai Young Bakers would also have the opportunity to go to France to polish their baking skills. Because of their professional skill and English ability, they are favored by many foreign-owned enterprises in China. Graduates of this year have signed contracts with Shanghai Croissants, Nantong Jiamai Baking, Jianda Industrial Company and many other French-owned companies, and about to be their employees.
